Why I deserve this scholarship

Teaching as always been my passion. I had dreams when I was young of becoming a teacher just like my mother. I had dreams of making students understand a concept and applying it in their day to day lives. Making a student understand and be able perform arithmetic equations is not an easy task, it requires knowledge, good communication skills and patience. That’s why I have always admired being a teacher. If you ask some of the successful people in our country to give you a reason for their success, most probably they’ll point out their former teachers. Teachers have this unique ability to inspire you to achieve something. I was inspired by my science teacher who made teaching look fun. He would approach a new subject in such a manner that by the end of the lesson I’d feel like a world class scientist.

It’s this desire to change people lives by inculcating positive information and knowledge that drove me to the teaching profession. During the holidays, I’d volunteer to teach young children. Initially, I found the going tough as the children were noisy and were not grasping what I was teaching them quickly. This was a good learning experience as I learnt to be patient and took my time to make them understand. Also, as I tutored the children, I learnt how to handle each one of them individually. Some were fast in understanding, others were the know-it-all type and some were slow. Handling the slow learners was tough and it tested my patience and ability to cope with different situations. This experience led me into setting a long term goal of establishing a school targeting slow learners. I discovered that some of them are poor in theoretical lessons but good in the practical ones.

I believe my experiences will make me a better teacher. The passion to see children achieve their potential and applying what they have been taught in their lives is what drives me. My short term goal is to attain a degree in education. I want to upgrade my skills and be able to handle more advanced students. Also, getting a degree will not only raise my status among my peers but motivate children who look up at me as their role model. My desire is to make students understand that schools are not punishing grounds but are launching platforms for their future careers. I have been invited to a number of schools where I gave lectures on the relevance of our current education system, and how it influences decision making.

I am very proud of what I have achieved. I’ve helped many children learn how to write and read, I have changed the mindset of several students who saw school as a waste of time. I believe I possess a talent for teaching others in a friendly manner and in a manner that helps them to grasp difficult concepts easily. A good teacher leads by example, that’s why I need this opportunity to further my studies and be a future reference to aspiring teachers.

I have been impressed by the quality of your education programme. Attending your Education programme would be one of the greatest rewards for my motivation and persistence for success. I swear to uphold and exceed all that is expected of a future teacher while promoting the progress of education and humanity.
