Nathaniel Hawthorne came from Salem, Massachusetts. He was born on July 4, 1804. His birthplace is open to the public. His great-great-great-grandfather William Hathorne was the first family member to emigrate from England. He settled in Dorchester, Massachusetts before he moved to Salem. He was part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. William also held various positions including a magistrate and a judge. People knew him for his harsh sentencing.
Nathaniel's great-great-grandfather John Hathorne oversaw the Salem witch trials. It made the author add the ''w'' to his surname, which happened when he was in his early twenties. He tried to distance himself from his forebears. After the death of his father Nathaniel Hathorne, Sr. in 1808, him, his mother and two sisters moved in with relatives (Mellow, 1980).
Young Nathaniel suffered an injury on the leg, which made him became lame and bedridden for over a year. However, several physicians could not diagnose the problem. He joined Bowdoin College in 1821. His families connections in the area were one of the reasons for his admission. He met the future President Franklin Pierce on his way to Bowdoin. When he was in school, he got to know Poet Henry Longfellow, Congressman Jonathan Cilley and naval reformer Horatio Bridge (McFarland, 2004).
