Civil rights ensure the protection of the individuals' freedom from government infringement. They also certify that social organizations and other people do not cause any harm. Therefore, a citizen can participate in the life of the society or the state without repression or discrimination.
Civil rights for all includes ascertaining the people's mental and physical integrity, safety and life. They ensure that the citizens will not face any form of discrimination on grounds such as gender, race, national origin, religion, or sexual orientation. They also look after the freedoms of thoughts and conscience, expression and speech, movement, the press, and assembly (Szasz, 1992).
They form the original part of international human rights. They comprise the first section of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948. They are ''first-generation rights'' according to one theory. They guarantee equal protection under the constitution or the law governing the country. An opposition, social unrest, or legal action may ensue if the responsible authorities do not adhere to them.
According to historians, New Orleans was the cradle of all civil rights movements in the U.S. It was because of the earliest efforts of the Creoles to merge the military. Men of color wanted to be members of the militia. They pledged their loyalty and volunteered their services to their newly adopted country (Carter, 1940).
