The need for validation drove the black military experience. When historians are looking at the Civil War, they analyze the African-American soldiers because they were instrumental in the battle. Any study will emphasize on the contribution of Black veterans. However, the focus shifts beyond the success to the questioning of what happened after the glorious experience (Shaffer, 2004).
After the war, the black veterans realized there was an existential aspiration. They desired to become men. However, the manhood did not guarantee equality. They observed that they did not get the satisfaction they had hoped. The conditions they fought for, for example, civil and political rights remained to be a mirage. There was no economic solvency or social benefits.
After the glory, some black Civil War veterans continued in service. Others opted to look for other avenues of exploring the promises. They realized that their future was not as bright as they had thought. They developed a renewed sense of responsibility to the black community. They involved themselves in the building of structures in order for the people to survive.
However, the struggles of the black Civil War veterans were many. Their ambitions and assertive roles were subversive especially against the norms of the white hegemony. The Whites reaction was violent. Also, they only achieved marginal political roles (Shaffer, 2004).
