Nat Turner came from Southampton County, Virginia. His master Benjamin Turner recorded his name as ''Nat.'' He became the property of Samuel Turner after Benjamin's death. Some sources referred to him as Nathaniel during the Civil War. Many historians also adopted the convention. Nat Turner did not know much about the background of his father.
Nat Turner was born on October 2, 1800. He was an African-American slave, and he led a rebellion to free blacks in Southampton County, Virginia. It was on August 21, 1831, and it resulted in the death of 60 white men. He was also the leader of another group of followers who were carrying farm implements during a killing spree (Bisson, 2005).
As a result, Virginia legislators targeted the blacks with a colonization bill. It allocated new funding for their removal. There was also another one that denied them trials by jury. Hence, it made any convicted slave a subject to sale and relocation. Whites militias called out troops to control the rising. Mobs attacked all the blacks in the area (Harris, 1995).
There was the death of about 100-200 blacks. Many of them did not take part in the revolt. Nat Turner hid for two months. The state arrested and executed 57 people and accused them of joining Turner's slave rebellion. When the militias found him, they tried, convicted and sentenced him to death through hanging.
