Sedition Act and PATRIOT Act Essay

Compare And Contrast The Sedition Act and the PATRIOT Act Essay

Star InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar Inactive

There are parallels between the PATRIOT Act of 2001 and the Sedition Act of 1798. The U.S. government enacted the latter after the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. The purpose of Sedition Act was to prohibit the criticism of the federal governorship. However, it also gave President John Adams the mandate to deport any alien he found suspicious. The PATRIOT Act gives the authorities the power to pry into the affairs of the American citizens (Stone, 2004).

The two Acts have clauses that state that anyone the federal government finds guilty faces a prison term, which is in the opinion of the President. According to the two, the public safety is key. The Sedition Act forbade the use of abusive language about the U.S., the flag, or the armed forces. They did not want others to view the country or its leadership with contempt. The jail sentence ranged from five to 20 years.

The Postmaster General also had the power to refuse to deliver the mail that had the same standards. The PATRIOT Act was the Congress' legislation to strengthen security controls. However, the opponents of the law criticized how it gave the authorization of the indefinite detentions of immigrants, the permission that the law enforcement had to search a premise without the owner's consent or knowledge, and the use of National Security Letters (Wong, 2006).
