The Norton Simon Museum is in Pasadena, California, U.S. It is an art museum. The previous names were Pasadena Art Museum and Pasadena Art Institute. Its collections include European sculptures, paintings, and tapestries. It also has works from Asia and other parts of the world. It is along the Tournament of Roses's route, where a person can spot it due to its brown tile-exterior.
The Norton Simon Museum has sculpture gardens, which display many sculptors works. The landscape setting has a pond. It also has the Norton Simon Theater, which shows films daily. It hosts symposiums, lectures, and dance and musical performances. In 1954, it changed its name to Pasadena Art Museum after receiving multiple German-Expressionist pieces from Galka Scheyer (Muchnic, 2009).
The Norton Simon Museum filled a void as it was the only museum in La Jolla and San Francisco in California then. It was famous for progressive art exhibits. It also supported the local contemporary artists' talents. In 1962, curator Walter Hopps organized an early Pop show. Marcel Duchamp had one in 1963, and so did Kurt Schwitters and Joseph Cornell (Vogel, 2007).
The architect of the Norton Simon Museum was from a list of California architects that Hopps had drawn. He wanted a local professional to handle the building because of the high-level of interaction throughout the process. The completion of the Pasadena Art Museum was in 1969. John Kelsey and Thornton Ladd had designed it.
