The Democratic Party is a major political parties in the United States. The other is the Republican Party it traces its origin to Thomas Jefferson and James Madison's Democratic-Republicans. Its formation was around 1828. Hence, it is the world's oldest party. It was once the cradle of classical liberalism and libertarianism in the U.S. (Rorty, 1997).
The Democratic Party has promoted center-left, social-liberal platform since the 1930s. It has been supporting a mixed economy, social justice, and a welfare state. It calls for the mixed economy by supplying government intervention and regulation. The philosophy of modern American liberalism suggests equality in all the spheres of life (Stonecash, 2010).
The Democratic Party intervenes through support for labor unions, the introduction of programs, calls for universal health care and equal opportunity, and environmental and consumer protection. They are the party's agenda in terms of the economic policy. Starting in the 20th century, it had a pro-business wing that attracted support from the European ethics. Most were Catholics who were in cities. There was also the populist-conservative and the evangelical group in the rural South.
15 of the United States presidents were Democrats. Andrew Jackson was the first, and the most recent one is Barack Obama, who is also the first American-American head of state. He has served since 2009. Following the 2014 elections, the party holds the minority of seats in the Senate and also in the House of Representatives.
