Deforestation in Colombia is tragic. The country loses 2,000km2 of forest annually. The statistics are according to the United Nations. However, others suggest that the figure is higher because of illegal logging in the region. Aside from that, the other challenges are small-scale agricultural ranching, cocaine production, development of energy resources, for example, hydro-electricity, and farming.
Deforestation in Colombia has affected around one-third of the nation's original forest. The target is mainly rainforest. It covers more than 80% of the land. In return, it has an ecological impact in the state's biodiversity, which has 10% of the species in the world. One cause of the present state is the National Plan Pacifico. It intends to raise enough revenue to develop the economy.
The plan causes deforestation in Colombia because in involves the exploitation of the country's rain-forests. Therefore, there is the extraction of natural resources for the exportation purposes. There is the erosion of riverbanks, which affects the levels of river beds, the aquatic life, and fish stocks (Mittermeier, 2009).
Deforestation in Colombia also had effects on the navigation and transportation because of silting. The clearing accounts for habitat destruction for all the creatures who dwell in the Columbian forests. Currently, the cotton-top tamarin ranks highly on ''The World's 25 Most Endangered Primates'' list. Environmentalists suggest that it could get worse (Schwitzer, 2009).
