After World War II, the Soviet troops marched across the Balkans. They raped women and committed robberies in Romania, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Yugoslavia. They spared the Bulgaria population because of its ethnic kinship and Marshal Fyodor Tolbukhin's leadership. Germany was the worst affected. It was more than the Nazi propaganda had anticipated. Political leaders asked the Soviets to seek revenge.
In the post-war Europe, the Red Army soldiers raped 1.9 million German women. Many died mainly by suicide. Germans fled to the West. However, not all the Soviet soldiers participated in the activities. They denounced the foreign reports as false. They blamed German bandits. They claimed that they were impersonating the Soviets. There are those who sided with them, basing on the earlier brutality of the Germans (Mannik, 2008).
East German histories ignored the actions of the Soviets, until the reunification of Germany. They often dismissed the mass rapes reports as the by-product of war. In the European post-war era, it could have also been anti-Communist propaganda. The activities began with the French Moroccan troops occupation of Wurttemberg and Baden. The U.S. Army also did the same in Britain, France, and Germany.
In the European post-war period, the soldiers left many children behind in the nations they had invaded. For example, France and Denmark, where they occupied for long. After they had been gone, the offspring and their mothers suffered recriminations (Martin, 1990).
