In 1608, a group of Christian Protestants came to the New World. They were looking for the freedom to practice Puritanism, which was a form of Christianity. However, they met another community of the Native Americans who were the original inhabitants of the region. When they collided, there was oppression, guerrilla warfare, and years of enforced ideology. There was the culture clash between the Southerners and the Puritans.

Religion was an important part of the Puritan and Southern culture. However, their ideologies were contrasting. According to the Puritans, God had selected some people to join him in heaven. The Southerners, on the other hand, believed that there was no one better than the other. Their theory conflicted with that of the Puritans. They had their Bible, which detailed their religion and answered all questions. It was part of their literature.

The Southerners transmitted their theology orally. They did not have any literature. Hence, they filled the blanks between stories and their ideal. It made them not relate with the Puritans. They worshiped God but took reverence for all living things. They had an omnipotent Tirawa. The Puritans faith was in God Only (Nuttall, 1992).

Another contrast between the Puritan culture and that of the Southerners was the moral and ethical values. The former valued faith, while the latter saw their actions as their belief tools (Hall, 1988).
