Blacks in 1960 Essay

The statistics were grim for the Blacks in the 1960s. Their lifespan was seven years less than that of the Whites. Their children barely finished high school and progressing to college was a mirage. Only a few entered the professional world. They had to battle unemployment. Despite many court victories, they were still second-class citizens.

The Blacks in the 1960s remained desegregated. Less than a quarter of their population could vote. In some counties, it was worse. They were not supposed to frequent any place belonging to the Whites. They suffered insult, humiliation, embarrassment, and discrimination. Other neighborhoods, unions, and businesses totally excluded them (Townsend, 1998).

Mechanized cotton production eliminated the Blacks in the Northern cities in the 1960s. The labor-saving technology left many unemployed. There were no more semiskilled and unskilled jobs available for them. Opportunities meant for them were now gone. Their families experienced strain. The Black women became the heads of the household because the men had gone to look for greener pastures.

However, during the 1960s, there was hunger that arose among the Blacks. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave them a voice. He called for action. The time was now. They had waited for long. He insisted that the government had to safeguard the civil and political rights of the African-Americans (Carson, 1981).
