James Joyce published Araby in his 1914 Dubliners collection. The author uses first-person narration. Hence, he immerses the reader at the start of the short story in the life the people on the North Richmond Street lived. The verve and the imagination of the children are the only source of illumination. They insisted on playing until their bodies glowed, despite the darkness that came during the winter months.

In Araby, the neighborhood conditions are not desirable. However, the children's play is their magical way of perceiving the world. The author writes that their shouts echoed in the silent streets. It brought them through the muddy lanes, which were behind the houses. They ran the gantlet of the tribes from their cottages. There were dripping gardens that had odors from the ash-pits. The odorous stables where the coachman combed the horse (Conboy, 1991).

The Araby has multiple themes and traits, which is similar to Joyce's other works in the Dubliners. It involves a character traveling through a journey, which has a fruitless result. He will in turn return to where he belonged initially. Another story ''Eveline'' has a similar plot. The structure has archetypes between it and the medieval romantic literature.

Araby has rigorous precision, which is upon the paradigm of medieval romance. The scorn that the narrator has for his uncle displays the portrait of Joyce's father. It could also be the prototype for Simon Dedalus' work (James, 1914).

Testimonial.
