Connecticut is in the New England region in the United States. It is the southernmost state in that area. Together with New Jersey and New York City, they form the Tri-State Area. Rhode Island borders Connecticut to the east, to the north is Massachusetts, to the west is New York, and to the south is Long Island Sound. The capital city is Hartford. Its name comes from the Connecticut River, which bisects it. The word is from multiple anglicized spellings, which mean long tidal river.
The most populous city in Connecticut is Bridgeport. By area, it is the third smallest and 4th most densely populated of the United States. In terms of the population, it is the 29th. It is also the Constitution State or the Provisions State. Connecticut was part of the development of the United States federal government. Most of its southern and western regions are part of the New York metropolitan area (Breen, 1997).
Three of Connecticut's counties are part of the New York combined statistical areas. The center of its population is in Cheshire, New Haven County. The first settlers in the state were Dutch. They started a short-lived settlement in what we know as Hartford. It was at the confluence of the Connecticut and Park Rivers. They called it Huys de Goede Hoop. At first, half of Connecticut belonged to the Dutch colony, New Netherland.
In the 1630s, Thomas Hooker led followers from the Massachusetts Bay Colony to Connecticut (Scott, 2014).
