The Moon is a natural satellite of the Earth. In fact, it is the only one. It is also part of the Solar System. Among the planetary bodies, its size is like the planets'. Scholars estimate the formation to have been 4.5 billion years ago. The Earth came before it. Many hypotheses try to explain the origin. The popular one is that it formed from the debris from the impact between Theia and Earth. The former was a Mars-sized body (Taylor, 1992).
Of the satellites whose weight is apparent, it is the second-densest. The Moon is always in a synchronous rotation with the Earth. It shows the same face always. A volcanic maria marks its near side. It is the second-brightest visible celestial object in the sky. However, its surface is dark. The measurement is the illumination on the Earth's view. It has a regular cycle of phases, which made it a cultural influence (Wilhelms, 1993).
Since ancient times, people have used the phases of the Moon to make calender, art, contribute to the language, and the mythology. Its gravitational influence produces the slight lengthening of the day, ocean tides, and the body tide. Its orbital distance is three times the Earth's diameter. It appears to have an apparent size the same as the Sun's. Therefore, it can cover the Sun during a total solar eclipse. The Soviet Union's mission was the first to reach the Moon.
