The Great Depression affected everyone. Some more than the others. However, it touched all in some way. In 1933, during the inauguration of Roosevelt, the unemployment was almost at 25%. It fluctuated in the 1930s and never fell below 14.3%. It would later improve in 1941. There was pressure in the families. They changed in dramatic ways. Many couples opted not to get married. There was a drop in the cases of divorces. The reason was the expense of hiring legal aid and paying for child support.

The family pressure in the Great Depression also saw a drop in the birthrates. They were lower than the replacement levels. It was the first occurrence in American history. During Herbert Hoover's administration, there was the loss of employment. The income decrease by 35% to $15M, during his term. It put a deal of stress on the nuclear units. There are those that pulled together what they had, and the others asked their relations and friends for help (Allen, 1963).

After they had exhausted all their alternatives, the people turned to the government for help. Some families could not stand that pressure, hence, they fell apart during the Great Depression. During the period, the traditional roles changed. They relied on their wives to make the ends meet. Some stopped looking for work. Therefore, they stopped being the breadwinners and decision-makers in their homes (Allen, 1963).
