During his lifetime, Booker T. Washington married thrice. He credited all his wives in his autobiography ''Up From Slavery.'' They all contributed to Tuskegee. The first one was Fannie N. Smith, who was from Malden, West Virginia. Washington had lived in the town from the age of 9-16. He continued to maintain ties all his life. Their union was in the summer of 1882. They bore one child, Portia M. Washington. In May 1884, Fannie died (Bauerlein, 2004).
Booker T. Washington married Olivia A. Davidson later. It was in 1885. She had been born in Virginia. She attended Massachusetts State Normal School and Hampton Institute. She worked at Tuskegee as a teacher. The two met there. At the time, she was the assistant principal. Together they had two sons, Ernest Davidson Washington and Booker T. Washington. She died in 1889. The third wife was Margaret James Murray, who was from Mississippi.
Booker T. Washington married her in 1893. They did not get any children from their union. However, together they raised the three from his previous marriages. She lived longer and died in 1925. Despite all that was happening in his life, Washington remained the principal at Tuskegee. He traveled and worked widely. In 1915, his health began deteriorating (Anderson, 1988).
He collapsed in New York City and died at his home in Tuskegee on November 14, 1915. His resting place was near the University Chapel, on the campus of Tuskegee University.
