Affirmative Action: Then v. Now Essay

There has been the debate of whether the affirmative action has changed as it was during the formative years. Some analysts say that things have become better, while some scholars beg to differ. The Civil Rights Act of 1964, led to the incorporation of minority groups into the economic mainstream of the country. The tool was Title VII, which prohibited discrimination in the employment sector. From there, some other programs emerged. The cause was to safeguard the equality of all the American citizens (Shaw, 2014).

Now, the progress has been breathtaking. However, blacks feel that they are still victims of housing segregation, income inequality, and unequal educational opportunity. The affirmative action: then and now is the best and the worst time. The election of a black president, for example, does not mean that there has been the disappearance of all instances of inequality. The systemic issues are still prevalent (Shaw, 2014).

However, there is the uneasy alliance between the gender and racial preferences. Americans are uniting to try and rectify the decades of discrimination. The difference between the affirmative action then and now, is that today there is more support of the programs. One of the areas of focus is the college admissions. The road to employment equality has been bumpy. The black middle class is growing.

However, many remain at the bottom of the economic ladder. There is also the attempt to look for temporary fixes that are affecting the minority groups.
