The Battle of Shiloh was a battle in the Western Theater of the Civil War. It is also called the Battle of Pittsburge Landing. It was from April 6-7, 1862. It happened in southwestern. Major General Ulysses S. Grant, was leading the Union army, which had moved deep into the Tennessee. However, the Confederate forces encamped it at Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee. It was on the west bank of the river. The attack on Grant's side was a surprise (Cunningham, 2007).

During the Battle of Shilloh, General Albert Sidney Johnston died in action. Hence, General Pierre G. T. Beauregard took over the command of the Confederate forces. He decided against pressing an attack in the evening. However, Grant received reinforcements overnight from another Union army. Therefore, he launched an unexpected counterattack in the morning, which reversed all the Confederate had gained the previous day.

April 6, was the first day of the Battle of the Shilloh. The Confederates' intention was to drive the Union defenders out of the river. They wanted them in the swamps of Owl Creek. Johnson hoped that they would do so before the arrival of the Army of Ohio, which General Don Carlos Buell. The battle lines became confused. Grant's men fell back to the northeast.

A slightly sunken road gave them time to stabilize. They were under the protection of multiple artillery batteries. In the middle of the attack, General Johnston suffered a shot in the leg. He bled to death (Allen, 1997).
