An atomic bomb is an explosive device. It gets its destructive force from nuclear reactions. They could be either fission or a combination with fusion. The two release quantities of energy from small amounts of matter. The first test gave out the same as approximately 20,000 tons of TNT. They used a plutonium implosion-type, which they had codenamed ''Fat Man''. It destroyed Nagasaki. The bombings led to the death of approximately 200,000 military personnel and civilians. Their ethics and role in the surrender of Japan remains a subject of debate.
