Born on May 10, 1838, John Wilkes Booth was a stage actor. His parents were Junius Brutus Booth and Mary Ann Holmes. They settled near Bel Air in Harford County, which was in Maryland. He was the ninth of ten children. His father legally married Holmes on May 10, 1851. According to Nora Titone, the shame and ambition of Wilkes and his brother felt spurred them to strive. They were rivals who sort achievement and acclaim. Edwin became a Unionist, while Wilkes was Abraham Lincoln's assassin (Smith, 1992).
On April 14, 1865, Abraham Lincoln attended Ford's Theater in Washington, D.C. It was where he met his death. John Wilkes Booth was part of the prominent Booth theatrical family, which was from Maryland. By the 1860s he was a well-known thespian. Aside from that, he was a Confederate sympathizer and vehemently denounced Lincoln. He also opposed the abolition of slavery in the U.S. He worked together with other conspirators (Lockwood, 2003).
Together with his co-conspirators, they had originally plotted to kidnap Lincoln. They later changed their minds and decided to kill him. Their purpose was to help the Confederacy's cause. John Wilkes Booth insisted that the American Civil War was still on because the Confederate Army was still fighting the Union Army. However, the rest were not successful in carrying out their part of the plot. The President died the next morning, after Booth had shot him in the back of his head.
