Nurses usually perform family health assessment in order to establish or to determine health condition of a given family. This exercise is paramount because it provides health practitioners with adequate information that helps them to identify specific areas that can pose health risks, areas that require health education and those that needs special medical attention. In order to get efficient outcomes, the nurses need to assess and compare the family’s historical health records, perceptions, and results and compare the findings with the current nursing results. Family health assessment is also vital in nursing because it alerts the nurses of the appropriate diagnosis procedures that ought to be taken to achieve the family’s optimum health. The researcher conducted a family health assessment to a family that is in the fourth stage in the family life cycle in accordance with the Family Developmental Theory.

Health perception can be identified as the way in which an individual rates him/herself as either healthy or ill. It is imperative to have a clear comprehension of health perception of a family prior to conducting a family health assessment since it enables nurse to decide the appropriate way to approach the family. Some people consider themselves healthy despite chronic diseases whereas others think about themselves as sick irrespective of absence of evident diseases. The family that the researcher assesses takes a case 2 where they refer themselves to have excellent health, even though, their son had an ADHD condition, and the husband has always been insomniac. The family, however, observes good health habits such as taking well-balanced diet and also taking regular exercises. The family regulates intakes of red meat and calories and instead takes a lot of fruits and vegetables. The family is also involved in sports such as cycling, and they observe proper hygiene. Although the family takes a positive perspective of the health it worth to accept the chronic conditions surrounding the family so that they can make efforts to getting permanent solution to the chronic health problems.

The concept of health perception is critical to this family. The family perceives sleep and rest as a good indicator of their health. The husband is insomniac and sometimes he has to take ambient so that he can fall asleep. At times, his son is also given melatonin when he cannot sleep due to his ADHD condition. Lack of proper sleep affects husband’s productivity at work. There could be even more impacts on job’s productivity if the husband goes on taking excess wine as a way of coping with his insomniac condition. This has compelled him to develop some special environment in his bedroom where he has installed a white noise machine that keeps off outside noise from getting into the house. The idea of sleep has affected the husband’s health condition as the wife reports that she has been forced to wear ear plugs so as to minimize his snoring from destructing her sleep. Even though the family has identified health problems concerning their rest and sleep, the husband is using inappropriate approaches to deal with it. Use of excess wine and sleeping pills cannot help in getting permanent solution to this problem. Receiving professional guidance is the best way to deal with sleeping problem in this family.

The wellness nurses diagnosis portrayed this family’s perception of health to have been improving gradually. They were seen to be capable of comparing their past medical status with the present condition. There were no drastic changes except that the husband’s urinary stream was taking longer to come out compared to his earlier age. He had however seen a medical expert and examined. This is a commendable move for a family that has a positive perception of health.

Each member of the family has his/her identified roles. The husband takes the role of providing, giving care and providing support to his family. Besides, the family has established family and friend relationships. They relate well to friends and co-workers. The wife seems to have a more established friends’ network as compared to her husband. The husband appears to be more tied to his demanding job, and he, therefore, has very little time to spend with friends. The wife accepts the responsibilities taken by her husband, and she recognizes instances where his accomplishments of his roles are imperfect. The relationship of this family with each other, friends and co-workers is affected by communication and availability of finances. The wife spends more money because she is more adventurous, and she likes going for outings with friends.

It is a rising concern how the roles and responsibilities are impacted by factors such as communication and availability of finance in this family. The husband spends more time in his high demanding job and eventually he has poorly established relationship with his family and friends. This has in turn affected the discipline of their sons. He spends the most time at his job and very little time with his son thus the child doesn’t receive adequate parental guidance on the way to approach changes in his developmental life. The wife, on the other hand, has invested more time on her friends and work to an extent of forgetting her parenting role of her son. Also, she is more relaxed about the issue regarding their son’s discipline. Even though they are making efforts of enhancing the discipline of their family, what they have done is still wanting.

A critical analysis of the family’s health reveals that the family has a positive perspective on health and wellness. They have maintained properly balanced diet which is demonstrated by their normal BMI. Eating well-balanced diet and taking regular exercise has been the key factor that has promoted the family health and wellness. The parents have also been able to identify health problems within their life, and they have made attempts to get solutions to these health problems. In some circumstances, the family has taken commendable steps such as visiting a medical expert for check up, taking regular exercises and eating well-balanced diet. It has however failed where the husband takes excess wine to cope with his insomniac situation rather than seeking medical guidance. There has been a relaxed approach towards parenting responsibilities on both sides of the couple, but things seem to be improving with better plans being underway. The couple also seems to be preparing for stage five of family life cycle. The husband wishes his wife could start spending less on outings so that they can save more for their son’s future education and also for them to retire early. Even though the family has been faced with some challenges in the fourth stage of family life cycle, they have done enough as far as health and wellness are concerned and they will manage to go through the next stage of family cycle according to the theory of development.
