As the nation’s medical centers face increasing requirements to join the various top quality enhancement initiatives, the role and influence of nursing staff in these efforts is also increasing (Wan, 2010). In recent years, emphasis on improving the quality of proper care provided by the nation’s medical centers has increased significantly and continues to gain momentum. Because nursing staff are integral to hospitalized patients’ proper care, they are considered pivotal in medical center efforts to improve quality (Sherwood & Barnsteiner, 2012). Nurses are the largest deliverers of medical health service in the U.S. as established by medical researchers, and as medical center participation in quality enhancement actions increases, so does the role of nursing. As medical centers face increasing requirements to join in quality enhancement actions, they are reliant on nursing staff to help address these requirements. Gaining a more in-depth understanding on the role that nursing staff play in top quality enhancement and the challenges involved can provide important insights about how medical centers can optimize resources to improve patient proper care top quality (Duffy, 2009). This level of sponsorship has to be there for top quality enhancement to be successful.
