Introduction

The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) is responsible for identifying the key competencies for all nursing practitioners (NPs). These core competencies assist in standardizing the quality knowledge and skills of nursing practitioners. The 2012 core competencies comprise scientific foundation, practice inquiry, quality of clinical practice, leadership, technology and information literacy, policy, health delivery system, independent practice, and ethics (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2006). This paper will examine the manner in which I have observed the core nursing competencies as I discharge my nursing duties. It will also delve into details what I need to do to master the competencies as I progress in the clinical field.

Discussion

Nursing practitioners must observe all the core competencies in order to be effective nurses (Gibson, 2004). As a nurse who aims at improving the quality of health care and the overall treatment of patients; I consistently meet expectations with little guidance, I am proficient, can perform my work independently, and I am ready for learning experiences. In order to assess my performance, I can clearly explain the manner in which I have exhibited leadership skills and observed ethics in my duties.

In one of my shift, the hospital administrator assigned me the role of an overseer since the shift supervisor was absent. While performing our duties, two of the nurses had a quarrel as to who was to perform which duty. Both of them wanted the same duty. As the shift supervisor for the day, I had to strep in to solve the squabble. I utilized conflict resolution and mediated their differences, I advised them on the importance of team work as an important factor in patient optimization and care. After deliberating together for ten minutes, we unanimously agreed on how to work. In this case, I fully exploited my leadership skills to amicably solve a dispute.

In regards to observing ethics, I once had a dilemma making a decision when one patient refused to eat. I did not want to force him to eat against his wish. On the other hand, I could not comply with his demands. Therefore, my only option was to talk with the patient, I talked to him nicely and asked him which food types he wanted. At first he was adamant, however, he finally agreed and I ensured that he was given the meal he had requested.

Conclusion

In conclusion, observing the nursing competencies is vital for all nursing practitioners. This is ascribed to the fact they mould them into being responsible and professional nurses. Therefore, in order to master these competencies, nursing practitioners should try as much as possible to apply them during their practicum experience (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2006).
